Westmount is a friendly community a short distance west of downtown Edmonton. It was originally developed in 1910 to house young professionals. By the end of the 1930s, there were nearly 900 homes in Westmount, and the community continued to grow until around 1980.
While there are a lot of great amenities in Westmount, it is particularly known for Westmount Park — one of Edmonton’s best parks, covering three blocks. The park has a skating rink, several playgrounds, a fitness centre, water park, and sports facilities.
The community also has another skating rink, thanks to the Westmount Community League. The Westmount Skating Rink offers public skating, skating lessons and more during winter.
Locals can shop at the Westmount Centre, a mall which contains around 75 stores, including big-box stores such as Wal-Mart and Home Depot. It opened in 1955. Further shopping options can be found at 124 Street, a trendy area of stores, restaurants and galleries — many of which are independently owned.
Westmount’s real estate market was largely developed during the first half of the 20th century, and buyers will find many Craftsman- or Foursquare-style homes. Many of those older homes have been renovated while preserving their character. As well as detached houses, there are also plenty of low-rise apartment buildings in the neighbourhood.
